NEWS AND MEDIA CENTER -- The Tufts Community Union Senate on their last meeting for the semester passed two resolutions, with one being S.22-6 A Resolution Calling on the TCU Senate to Establish a Disability Community Senator Seat.
Jose Armando, E22, was one of the few senators working on a project that focuses on the disability community, through his "Ride In Hill" project in the Administration and Policy Committee. Jose went on to reach out to the authors of the resolution, showing his full support for the entire community.
"Tufts is not known for having an accessible campus, as you can see, many buildings on campus are not welcoming. Why should the disability community be left out of being part of campus? I also want to acknowledge learning disability and the neurodiverse community, ensuring that they may succeed here."

On December 6th, Jose decided to visit Tufts ABLE to speak about his project and also the plan behind the resolution. After his hour-long meeting, Jose thanked the disability community and its supporters for what they are doing. This fight for representation is very important and has taken a long time. The planning that Jose is looking forward to with ABLE and the disability community is to have a disability center. Unlike the StAAR Center, this center would focus on the disability community by providing resources and support, just like any other identity center.
On December 7th, Jose attended Rules Committee on Resolution S.22-6 where he brought questions from the senate body to the authors. Jose Armando expressed his concerns and what can Tufts University administration and TCU government can do for the community. Some senators asked who qualifies to represent the community, but Jose Armando expressed the ethics behind the question as disability is a wide range.
During Rules Committee, Jose also brought up the point he had with President Anthony P. Monaco regarding to disability on campus. Just like the conversation Jose had with Tim Jordan, Associate Director of Residential Education, "When work is being put on a building, accessibility features are being added". In addition to that, President Monaco plans in adding testing for disabilities.
"Having a disability senator is just the first step, as we are looking forward in having a disability center to represent students with learning and physical disability, and the neurodiversity community.
Representation is one of the various things we are asking Tufts to do. After all, we are all Jumbos."

Later on, on December 11th, Tufts Community Union Senate, unanimously passed the resolution, bringing victory for the disability community. Jose will continue to look forward to serving the disability community along with the new disability community senator, and there will be an election later on in the next semester to elect that new senator.
